Early Life & Education

Keyon Harrold was born in 1980 in Ferguson, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis.
He grew up in a musical and religious family, as both of his parents were pastors and his grandfather was a former police officer who founded a drum and bugle corps for local youth.
Harrold started playing trumpet at the age of six and soon developed a passion for jazz.
He was influenced by a wide range of musicians, including Miles Davis, Prince, Common, Dr. Dre, and J Dilla.

His second album, The Mugician, came out in 2017 and featured guest appearances from Pharoahe Monch, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Guy Torry, and Robert Glasper.
The album was inspired by Harrold’s experiences growing up in Ferguson and witnessing the social and political turmoil in America. The title is a combination of “musician” and “magician”, a nickname that Cheadle gave him for his ability to create magic with his trumpet.
