Adrienne-Joi Johnson was born on 3 September 1963 in Orange, New Jersey. She attended Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School and graduated with honors in 1985 from Spelman College in Atlanta, where she majored in psychology and minored in dance. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority. She also studied at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and the Uta Hagen School of Acting in New York City. She started her career as a dancer and choreographer, working with artists like Prince, Janet Jackson, and Paula Abdul.
Johnson began her acting career in 1988 with a guest role on the sitcom A Different World.
